Kelsey
by Robbie
Kelsey is working in two programs with Alzheimer's patients and the response here in Kelowna, British Columbia has been phenomenal. We volunteer at a residential care facility with a day program for out patients. There are approximately 20 clients in this group and Kelsey works with the group or small group or one on one depending on the needs of individual clients.
We also volunteer with another Alzheimer day program which has six ladies and one man. In this smaller setting we are able to work more closely with the group and one on one. The rehabilitation therapist works with us to assess needs and develop our visiting program.
The community is thrilled to have a certified therapy dog here to work in their programs. Michelle Wingfield who heads all the rehabilitation programs says “We are thrilled to have Kelsey and Robbie as part of our programs. Kelsey acts as a catalyst to bridging a gap for a client who is having trouble expressing themselves. Kelsey becomes a link for the clients and reduces stress. The positive benefits are very noticeable and we look forward to their visits.”
I also spoke to the volunteer coordinator who heads the hospice program and a treatment centre for children under five with head injuries and look forward to working with this group in the near future.
Thanks to Ottawa Therapy Dogs for keeping in touch!
