Boomer –Boomer is a five year old German Rottie that we’ve had since he was a tiny little pup. When we first got Boomer, we noticed there was something different about him. He was always quick to pickup on commands and he was docile and gentle with everyone that he met, whether it be adults or children. Buddy – Buddy is my sweet little Sheltie who has been sharing his warm and fuzzy personality with residents at various facilities around Ottawa for the past seven years. Kuma (also called Kumasan, which means “little bear” in Japanese) is a 6-year-old Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever who likes nothing better than placing her head on a warm lap. She loves the special attention she gets at Elmwood Lodge, a housing facility for women of all ages. Lady Byng – Lady Byng, a four-year-old Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, began her volunteer life with Ottawa Therapy Dogs in the summer of 2009. As the Duck Toller is one of the few all-Canadian breeds in the world, she was named after a very Canadian symbol: the Lady Byng trophy. Marni – Marni was born in November of the year 2000 — my “Millennium Baby”. We were introduced to Ottawa Therapy Dogs by a neighbour who had been involved for a number of years with her dog. She commented that Marni had the temperament suited to therapy work. Maya - Hi, I'm Maya and I turned 8 in 2011. When I was 6 I was so lucky to be adopted by Sandra. Once I settled into my new home, Sandra took me to school and there we learned lots of fun things. I learned how to jump through hoops, run through a tunnel, walk right beside Sandra without pulling on my leash and coming when called no matter what distractions were around. Moogly – Moogly is a 3-year-old male Golden Retriever with a beautiful dark red coat, an immense heart and unlimited zest for life. Armin and Chantale were lucky enough to be chosen by Moogly as his adoptive human parents at the SPCA of Western Quebec. Although he weighed more than 70 lbs at the time, he decided to sit on Chantale's lap after our very first walk together, as if choosing us as his forever family, or so we keep telling ourselves! Paddington our gentle giant, is named after the bear in the English children’s story. Like the lost teddy bear in the story, Paddington was found hungry and abandoned, under a street light in a village near here. He was about 3 months old and, with his fluffy puppy coat, his soft brown eyes and his very big paws, he looked like a teddy bear. [more...] |

Taffy – Taffy is not a show girl but, like all Irish Setters, she is pretty — or so everyone tells her! Her qualifications for a career as a pet therapy dog are her deep serious brown eyes, and her brains. And she is passionate about her work. Put on her scarf, and she is on the job. She stands a little taller, her head is held a little higher, her step a bit more deliberate but mostly those eyes become focused in a very human way. [more...] |
